I have a lot of thoughts regarding my future opportunities as a nurse in the medical field. In fact, I chose a career in nursing because of the abundance of these opportunities. At this point in my journey, I am most interested in emergency as well as psychiatric medicine. I have always worked well under pressure and appreciate the autonomy in doing so. Additionally, growing up as a military child, I have grown accustomed to and can appreciate change. Both specialties require the ability to work effectively in difficult situations and both provide a dynamic environment. There is, however, a lot more I would like to learn about these specialties of nursing. Regarding emergency room nursing, I am eager to learn more about the responsibilities of the nurse and the nurses’ role in treatment of the patient in both the immediate and long-term situations. On the other hand, I would like to further my education about psychiatric nursing as a whole. This specialty differs greatly from other specialties as it works much more closely with other health professionals, and I would like to learn more about this type of interprofessional treatment.
Evidence based practice, in my opinion, is the use of research to provide the safest and most appropriate care to yield the best outcomes for the patient. This type of practice applies to all aspects of patient care, including assessment and treatment of the patient in any clinical setting. My past work experience as a medical scribe during the pandemic plays a major role in these assumptions of evidence based practice. I can recall meeting after meeting discussing best practices when interacting with suspected Covid patients as well as the community population. All of these discussions were based on the latest research published and my clinic was quick to share their findings with the healthcare members to ensure best practice when treating patients. I also understand that there is a lot about evidence based practice that I do not know and I am therefore excited to learn more about this aspect of nursing. In the future, I am sure this course will further my knowledge and ability to care for patients as I will understand how to interpret and utilize the most up to date research to give my patients the most desirable outcomes.
