Preparation for Licensure and Transition to Professional Practice

As I completed the various ATI assessments this semester, I noticed a significant improvement in my test taking abilities. I can attribute this success to time spent remediating my incorrect answers, as well time spent exploring my test taking strategies. ATI allows the student to review the amount of time spent on each question and allows you to cross out questions that you believe are incorrect as you take the exam. This was helpful during the review and remediation process as I found that initially, I was not taking a lot of time answering the questions and was not eliminating possible incorrect answer choices. Once I began taking more time on questions and eliminating at least two answer choices, I noticed my test scores improve quite dramatically. Overall, though, I believe my improvement throughout the semester was directly related to time spent during the remediation process as I really took my time remediating each topic and utilized various resources to gain information on the content.

During this process, I also developed various self-care strategies that I implemented into my ATI assessment preparation. I found that I performed better when I focused on the timing of the exam and my environment while taking the exam. I felt much more relaxed when taking these assessments in the morning with a cup of coffee, snuggled on my couch with a blanket and candle. Additionally, I forced myself to take a break every seventy-five questions. Staying in a good head space, surrounded by a relaxing environment were important elements of my success while taking the ATI assessments.

I am glad I took these ATI assignments seriously and treated them as though I was taking the NCLEX because I feel that much more confident as I begin to prepare for licensure. I will continue to practice these exam taking strategies with practice questions and assessments. However, as I become closer to test day, I will incorporate practices that are more analogous to the testing environment. For example, I will sit at a desk and not allow any food or drink nearby when practicing. Additionally, I will continue to give myself short breaks every seventy-two questions. This is allowed during test day and will help me stay consistent with my test taking strategies. Overall, I am very pleased with my ability to prepare for licensure during this semester.
