Final Reflection

Collaborating with three other classmates over the past several months on a research project has been very beneficial for me as a student and future professional. I tend to shy away from group projects because I often find it difficult to work with others. This is not to say that I do not respect or have the ability to compromise with others, but I simply prefer to take command and ensure my own success. However, I understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration in any professional career, especially nursing. Every member of the healthcare team contributes to the success of the patient outcome in various ways, and this essentially establishes the healthcare continuum.

Working on group projects such as this one has helped me adapt into a better colleague because it has taught me humility. Projects such as quality improvement and evidence-based practice require a multitude of healthcare professionals because they seek answers to difficult questions. These are topics and questions that cannot be resolved with simply one person, but require the input from various individuals with diverse backgrounds. This could not be more applicable to my situation as a student surrounded by cohorts with various personal and professional experiences. I can honestly say that I would not have had the ability to gather the amount of material and knowledge regarding our topic question on my own. The success of this project is certainly attributed to the entire group itself.

Additionally, I was able to enhance my own communication skills as a team member. As expected with a group of four individuals, there were some conflicts. Unfortunately, I do not feel these were completely resolved due to overall work ethics. However, I can see further learning in future disagreements with colleagues. I recognize the importance of timely communication with other teammates even with minor issues as oftentimes these small problems can create larger dilemmas. With appropriate and timely communication, all of this can be avoided. This is something I hope to further engage in as a student and future nurse. Overall, this project has been a tremendous learning experience because it has given me the opportunity to establish and enhance my qualities of humility and communication.
