Human trafficking has certainly crossed my mind from time to time after watching a movie or reading a news article. Yet, I am ashamed to admit that I have always brushed it off as though it did not pertain to me. I had never considered the fact that human trafficking could be occurring within my own community to individuals who may use the same grocery store and gas stations as me. Up until now, I have been very naive about the realities of human trafficking. I was surprised to learn that human trafficking is not limited to sexual exploitation, but can also include unjust labor circumstances. Additionally, I found it interesting that this issue does not discriminate against any person of a certain age or gender. In fact, there is no specific profile for an individual that is being trafficked. Similarly, someone doing the trafficking cannot be determined by their image. Given my lack of insight, I found this discussion to be very enlightening.
While I still feel there is much more for me to learn about human trafficking, I look forward to apply what I know now as a registered nurse. I will recognize the subtle characteristics that one being trafficked may display and know to ask further questions. Perhaps the patient has a characteristic tattoo or perhaps they remain quiet while their partner stays in the room and relays the pertinent information. While it is important for me to understand how to appropriately care for these individuals, I need to remember that I will not be able to rescue every patient from their situation. Unfortunately, human trafficking creates significant emotional ties that can drastically interfere with the psychological well being of the individual being trafficked in such a way that they are reluctant to give up their role. This is something that I would like to learn more about as a student. Further research about the psychological effects of human trafficking may allow for better detection and management of the individual to help them find the safety and treatment they require. Overall, today’s discussion has been a beneficial learning experience for me both as a future nurse and as an individual of society.
